Points of Interest
The Peneda-Gerês National Park stretches from the Castro Laboreiro plateau to the Mourela plateau, including the Peneda, Soajo, Amarela and Gerês mountains. It is also the first protected area to be created in Portugal, in 1971.
The relief orientation, the altitude variations and the Atlantic, Mediterranean and continental influences have given to the whole area particular botanical characteristics translated in the existence of a diversified flora, whose symbol is the Gerês lily, endemic species of the Iberian Peninsula.
Points of Interest
The fauna of the national park was once the richest in the country, when there was the brown bear and the mountain goat in the area. However, despite the disappearance of these species, it still presents, today, a great variety of daisies species that stand out: the deer, the Iberian wolf, the golden eagle, the fox and the boar, among other species.
The visit to a protected area should be done in such a way as to disturb the surrounding natural environment to a minimum. Only in this way will it be possible to fully enjoy the landscapes, sounds and smells that make the national park a unique place in our country.
